Semester: 2013/2014 winter
Name: Environmental chemistry
Major: Environmental Protection
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 3
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: Prof. dr hab. Zofia Spiak
Language of instruction: Polish / English

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student gains theoretical and practical knowledge related to the circulation of elements in nature and their migration in the soil-plant-water-air system. Students not only determine the quality of soil, water and plants for contamination but also identify source of contamination (fertilization, waste, fertilizer industry). Students are able to analyze the effects of pollution, additionally, they meet with methods to prevent pollution or eliminate them from the environment. Skills: Student gain skills self-assessment of pollution in different ecosystems. Moreover, he/she can do chemical analysis of soil, water, plants and air in environmental laboratories. Student makes decisions for the prevention, reduction and removal of environmental pollution effects.

Competences: Social competence: Student demonstrates understanding of phenomena occurring in the soil-plant-animal-human system. What is more, he or she sees the need of self-development and further education. Student evaluates and explains causes and effects of pollution of different biosphere elements. Furthermore, every student organizes and leads researches in a team. During the various stages of work students both comply work safety regulations and are responsible for ensured equipment.

Prerequisites: Chemistry, Biochemistry, Soil science, Plant physiology

Course content: Circulation of elements in nature, sources of washout, evaporation, food production, basics of plants yielding, fertilization- meaning and its influence on the environment, eutrophication, the production of greenhouse gases, acidification and sulfur content in soils, heavy nutrients in agricultural ecosystems- susceptibility and tolerance of plants and animals, methods of pollution measurements, toxicity evaluation, methods of prevention.
