Student shall: understand the concepts of plant disease and plant pathogen; understand the causes of plant disease, and be able to apply general principles in the study of plant diseases. Have good knowledge about interactions between pathogen and host and between pathogen and other organisms. Have an epidemiologically based understanding of the population dynamics of plant pathogens. Have knowledge about biology, diagnosis, damage, losses and control measures concerning the most important plant pathogens in horticulture. Competences:
Experts in plant pathology are needed in companies working in the agricultural and horticultural sectors, extension and advisory organizations, teaching, administration, research and in chemical company (pesticide). Prerequisites:
Botany, plant physiology, microbiology, agronomyCourse content:
Taxonomy, morphology, anatomy and physiology of plant pathogens. Identification and diagnostics. Infection processes and disease cycles of pathogens. Effects of plant pathogens on host plants. Resistance biology. Ecology and epidemiology. Management strategies, chemical and biological methods of control. Physiological damage and nutritional deficiencies. Laws - international aspects.
