Knowledge
Student knows structure of organic compounds, names and identifies particular groups of compounds, is able to propose the synthetic pathway of simple organic compounds and to characterize their chemical and spectroscopic properties, can describe and explain the course of chemical reactions, is able to propose simple chemical tests to identify functional groups in organic compounds and identify the compound on the basis of its spectroscopic data
Skills:
Student assembles and works on the apparatus for basic physical and chemical operations useful in the laboratory of organic chemistry, he gives correct interpretation of observed effects of chemical reactions, elaborates and makes organic preparations as well as determine its basic physicochemical data (melting point, boiling point and refractive index), on the basis of simple chemical tests and spectroscopic data (NMR, IR, UV) can identify unknown organic compounds by himself.
Social skills (attitude):
Student is creative and keen to cooperation in team, is active in solving group problems, is aware of hazards in chemical laboratory, follows the ethical rules

General and Inorganic ChemistryCourse content:
Nomenclature, properties and reactions of aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds containing the common functional groups. Stereochemistry and the electronic structures of these molecules. Mechanisms of reactions of organic compounds. The introduction to the major classes of biomolecules: carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. The application of spectroscopic methods to establishing the structure of organic compounds.
