Knowledge
Students, after course completion, explain the use of multienzymatic transformations in the synthesis; recognize enzymes participating in these transformations; explain advantages of the use of biocatalysis in synthesis; indicate methods of modification of the biocatalyst properties; recognize factors determining the process effectiveness.
Skills:
Students carry out enzymatic transformations utilizing various forms of biocatalysts; prepare these biocatalysts; operate the equipment; interpret the results and calculate the catalytic activity of enzymes; design and carry out determination of selected biological properties of compounds; identify obtained metabolites.Competences:
Students cooperate with other team members when preparing and executing the experiments; they are aware that cooperation and attitudes compatible with team cooperation rules have significant impact on the smooth workflow of the whole team.Prerequisites:
Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Basics of biotransformation.Course content:
Use of enzymatic reactions in modifications of molecules of natural substrates (carbohydrates, proteins, isoprenoids, antibiotics). Enzymatic reactions of carbon-carbon bond formation. “Green chemistry” – enzymes in synthesis of biodegradable surfactants. Bioremediation as a method of disposal of environmentally persistent substances Genetic modification of microorganisms directed towards formation of an effective biocatalysts for a given transformation.
