PolishLearning outcomes:
At the end of the course student is familiar with: the ideas of Mendelian genetics; the structure and molecular organization of chromosomes and DNA; the gene function, regulation and mapping, mutation; the recombination and DNA repair.
Competences:
After completing the course students are able to solve simple problems in Mendelian genetics; discribe the structure and organization of genetic material in procaryotic and eucaryotic organisms; explain the mechanism of gene expression and its regulation.
Prerequisites:
Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, General Microbiology
Course content:
Genetics of Procaryota, Eucaryota and Viruses. The mechanisms of heritage- modification of mendelian laws. Structure, function and expression of procaryotic, eucaryotic and viral genes. Genetic variability- mutations, recombination, hybridization of protoplasts. Genetic mapping – genes and DNA markers (RFLP, SSLP, SNP). Genetic diseases. Basics of population genetics. Mitochondial and chloroplastal heritage. Recommended literature:
