Knowledge:
Student knows and understands the causes and development of hydrological extreme phenomena; knows scientific methods used for description of hydrological extreme phenomena; knows methods of floods and droughts forecasting; knows the methods of scientific, legal, technical and organizational actions used for mitigation of effects of floods and droughts.
Skills:
Student can generally describe a problem of occurrence of hydrological extreme event; knows how to acquire a necessary information and data from appropriate sources required for an assessment of hydrological extreme phenomena; can to assess the risk of flooding or drought by applying an appropriate hydrological model; can propose the activities for mitigation of effects of floods and droughts.
Competences:
Student is aware of the responsibility for the economical and rational management of water resources in the case of occurrence of hydrological extreme events; feels the need to deepen knowledge in the field of own specialization.Prerequisites:
meteorology and hydrology, mathematical statisticsCourse content:
Definitions of freshets, low flows, droughts. Classifications of freshets, freshets in Poland and in the world. Droughts and low flows in Poland. Processes and factors forming the hydrological extreme phenomena. Probabilistic and deterministic models of freshets and droughts. Methods of determination the maximum and minimum discharges. Forecasting of hydrological extreme events. Risk and uncertainty in hydrology. Methods for estimating an effective rainfall causing freshet. Hydrodynamic models of surface runoff. Models of flow in open channels. Criteria and measures of flooding potential of rivers. Low flow as characteristics of hydrological drought.
