Learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to introduce the fundamental issues considering the design of bridges. There will be presented the basic definitions and terms, structural elements and components and calculations method of bridges. During the course the standards and technical specifications related to the design, building and maintenance of bridges will be discussed. The student after completing the course is prepared to propose design solutions concerning the problems of design, construction and maintenance of simple rail and road bridges.

Competences: After completing the course, the student should be able to design a simple bridge structures and perform activities related to the operation and maintenance of the bridge infrastructure.

Prerequisites: soil mechanics, foundation engineering, structural mechanics, building materials, concrete structures, metal structures

Course content: Terminology and definitions (bridges, viaducts, overpasses, culverts). Classification of bridges. Building materials in bridge structures. The basic principles for the design of bridges. Small bridges and culverts: characteristics and conditions of technical application. Timber bridges and timber supports. Concrete bridges - general principles for design of concrete bridges: design of reinforcement and prestressed concrete structures. Steel bridges and metal supports. Composite Bridges: construction materials, design requirements, construction process. Cable-stayed bridges: design guidelines, technical solutions, equipment. Maintenance and repair of bridges, renovation, strengthening of bridge structure.

Assessment methods: Written exam , the project - at least 75%.
