Lecturer: prof. dr hab. inż. Joanna Szyda
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 - has the knowledge to interpret biological phenomena and processes in research and practical activities [KB2_W01]; W2 - knows the research methodology applicable in the natural sciences [KB2_W01]; W3 - formulates research hypotheses, and solves basic scientific problems [KB2_W01]; W4 - knows how to create interesting multimedia presentation [KB2_W01]. Skills: Student: U1 – based on the analysis of the collected data, the student is able to formulate and interpret the results of research tasks. Compares them with other sources. Draws the appropriate conclusions and makes appropriate judgments [KB2_U04]; U2 – student has the ability to prepare an attractive presentation in Polish and foreign language, describing detailed results of own research or of research of other authors within the field of biology. For this purpose the student uses Polish and foreign sources of scientific information, including electronic sources. The student critically evaluates the reliability of these sources and selects them accordingly. The student confronts his own views with others’ opinions and discuss them skillfully using scientific terminology from the field of biology [KB2_U05]; U3 –student uses the professional scientific literature in biology and related disciplines in Polish and English languages [KB2_U06]; U4 - student is able to use foreign language specific for the field of biology and related disciplines at a level higher than B2 [KB2_U10].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 - is willing to regularly update knowledge on biology and related disciplines, and conscious of the need for learning throughout life [KB2_K01]; K2 - is active in improving skills through courses and specialized training and the literature [KB2_K01]; K3 - is able to inspire and organize the learning process of others [KB2_K01].

Prerequisites: English language, genetics, introduction to bioinformatics

Course content: bioinformatics, genetics

Recommended literature: 1. Scientific publications related to genetics and bioinformatics from the following journals: Journal of Applied Genetics, Genetics, BMC Genetics, BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Genomics, PLOS One, PLOS Genetics, Bioinformatics

Assessment methods: Assessment of tutorials: Based on points scored by the students during tutorials. It is required to have at least 50% of possible points in order to obtain a positive evaluation. The presence at tutorials and lectures is compulsory.
