Knowledge:
Student knows the basic scientific methods for description of water cycle and dynamics of hydrological processes in relation to processes in the atmosphere. Has knowledge about processes occurring in river basins and connection of surface runoff with groundwater. Knows simple hydrological models for water stages and flow forecasting in rivers and their verification.
Skills:
Student can determine the hydrological characteristics in a river cross-section for the design of hydrotechnical structures. Can calculate discharges from controlled and uncontrolled basins. Is able to elaborate a water balance and to assess disposable water resources of watercourses. Can apply simple hydrological models for water stages and flow forecasting in watercourses.
Competences:
Student is aware of the uneven distribution of water resources in space and time.

meteorology, mathematics.
Course content:
Land phase of water cycle. Water balance. Characteristics of hydrological basins. Hydrometrical measurements of water stages and flow. Publications of hydrometrical measurements. Statistical processing of measurements of water stages. Corresponding water stages. Rating curve. Nonstationarity of rating curve. Methods of determination of characteristic discharges. Conventional discharges. Design and control discharges for hydrotechnical structures dimensioning. Maximum discharges with a given probability of exceedance. Homogeneity of random sample. Runoff, flow, measurements of runoff and flow. Mass curve (Ripple curve). Hydrological extreme phenomena. Simple relationships in hydrological forecasting.

Assessment methods:

Lecture 1: The objectives and tasks of hydrology. Land phase of water cycle. Water balance, components of water balance.
Lecture 2-3: Surface, point and linear hydrographical objects. Catchment, basin. Physicogeographical parameters of catchment area. Determination of average precipitation in the catchment area.
Lecture 4: Hydrometric measurements. Publications of hydrometrical measurements.
Lecture 5: Elaboration of hydrometrical measurements. Statistical processing of measurements of water stages. Corresponding water stages.
Lecture 6-7: Rating curve. Principle of construction of rating curve.
Lecture 8: Extrapolating the rating curves for low and high water stages. Nonstationarity of rating curve.
Lecture 9-10: Methods of determination of characteristic discharges in controlled and uncontrolled basins. Discharges of a specific duration, conventional discharges. Design and control discharges for hydrotechnical structures dimensioning.
Lecture 11: Maximum discharges with a given probability of exceedance. Random incidents, random sample, probability distribution. Methods for determination of the probability distribution and parameter estimation. Homogeneity of random sample.
Lecture 12: Runoff, flow, measurements of runoff and flow. Mass curve (Ripple curve).
Lecture 13: Hydrological extreme phenomena – low flows, droughts, freshets and floods.
Lecture 14-15: Simple relationships in hydrological forecasting, modelling in hydrology, verification of models.
Type and scope of the practical classes: individual project.
Project 1. Hydrological study of catchment of a chosen uncontrolled river.
