Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 - has a general knowledge on the different types of molecular markers and their practical applications [KB2_W01_BT, KB2_W07_BT]. Skills: Student: U1 - makes the right choice of molecular markers for their practical applications in various fields of science, as well as in clinical and forensic medicine [KB2_U06_BT].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 - understands the need for regular updating of knowledge in the field of molecular biology and related disciplines [KB2_K03].

Prerequisites: molecular biology, genetics

Course content: Definition and types of molecular markers; genome organization and marker sequences; hybridization- based markers; molecular markers linked to genes; PCR- based markers; markers linked to non-coding DNA; polymorphism and mtDNA markers; application of molecular markers in genetic disease diagnostics; molecular diagnostics of cancer diseases; molecular markers application in pharmacology; molecular markers applied in forensic medicine; molecular diagnostics in plant and animal diseases; application of molecular markers in population and phylogenetic research; protein molecular markers.

Assessment methods: Students write a test examination (60 one-choice questions) during the examination session. The test lasts 45 minutes. If the test will be failed on the first term, student has the right to correct the negative result in the second term (also course credit- written test).
