Knowledge:
Has theoretical and practical knowledge on the economically important diseases and pests, present on agricultural and horticultural plants. Knows and understands the impact of abiotic factors (humidity, temperature, soil pH, photoperiod) on the development of infective disease process and the pest development. Understands the dynamics of colonization by pathogenic factors and crops pests. Familiar with the basics of epidemiology and ecology of insects population. Has knowledge about dependences between pathogen /pest, plant host and environmental factors. Has knowledge about pathogens and pests control methods. Understand the need for integrated plant protection methods.
Skills:
Has the practical ability to recognize the most important pests and pathogens in agricultural and horticultural plants. Can explain the disease processes caused by characteristic viruses, bacteria and fungi. Know how to define basic concepts related to the chemical communication of insects. Possess the skill their practical of utilization. Know how to evaluate harmfulness of biotic factors, their impact on the quantity and quality of the yield and the risks associated with their presence in crop. Apply diagnostic laboratory methods. Know how estimate the importance of biodiversity, as a factor to stabilise of population equilibrium in agrocenosis. Student know how to evaluate the risks associated with exceeded threshold, apply damage scale and make decision about need for protection. Can properly plan, execute and check the quality of the plant protection treatment.

Social competence:
Student is aware of the negative consequences of improper storage and use of plant protection products. Understand their impact on the environment. Can critically refer to unfair marketing information regarding threats caused by pathogens and “needs” their immediate control (preventing abuse of pesticides). Student knows the social benefits resulting from application of integrated methods of plant protection. Able to work individually and to organize and conduct simple research on plant protection topics in the team. Understand the need for retraining and raising the competence in the field of plant protection products.Prerequisites:
Zoology (for academic level), Agroecosystems and general crop production, Botany, Biochemistry, Plant Physiology, Crop production.Course content:
The acquaintance of the pests and beneficial arthropods in agricultural crops. The role of abiotic factors and biotic modifying pests harmfulness. The assessment of the risks associated with exceeded their threshold.. The correct procedure of decision-making on the control of pest species. The ability to combine different control methods of crop protection. Knowledge of the biotic factors and abiotic agents caused disease in agricultural crops. The influence of environmental factors on the development and the size of damage. Mechanisms for plant health, the relationship between the plant and the factor calling out the disease.Recommended literature:

Assessment methods:
Knowledge: exercises - colloquia, written examination after 6 semester
Skills: Colloquium evaluation, the assessment of practical skills to recognize pests and crop infestation by fungi, bacteria, viruses, abiotic factors.
Social Competence: Student is aware of the acquired knowledge and to dispose of the news gained in discussions during classes and in farming practice, argument objectivity.
