Knowledge:
The student has a basic knowledge of the structure of DNA, the genetic code knows the rules, understand the biosynthesis of proteins. He knows the law and knows how to explain Mendel's gene linkage, crossing-over and provide general principles for mapping genes. It has the basic knowledge necessary to understand the types of mutations and their impact on genetic variation. He knows the basics of biotechnology, the use of in vitro culture and molecular markers. He can explain the meaning of the protection of genetic resources and gene bank organizations.
Skills:
Student is able to assess the need for safety in the laboratory especially when using the equipment in scientific equipment and work with reagents. Able to plan in accordance with guidelines to organize a system of protection of genetic resources, acquisition and evaluation and storage of plant materials.
Competences:
Personal and social competences:
The student is aware of the importance and understand the processes involved in the development and variability of living organisms, including the impact on the environment of compounds that interact with the carrier of genetic information of DNA. He can think and act for the protection of genetic resources appreciating the importance of biotechnology in the natural sciences. Is aware of the need for self-education and further improvement in terms of raising awareness and inform the public of environmental principles.
Prerequisites:
Botany, Chemistry, BiochemistryCourse content:
Genetics is the science of heredity and variation. Knowledge of principles and methods of gene inheritance of traits, identification and localization of genes and induce mutations will help to understand the world around them. Knowledge of the latest developments in the field of biotechnology will allow for learning methods to increase genetic variation, including the role of biotechnology in the conservation and improvement of crop plants.Recommended literature:
