Learning outcomes: Knowledge: student has advanced knowledge of the maintenance, welfare, trade and transport of wild animals and the underlying risks of zoonotics; student has knowledge of the areas of biology that are related to animal welfare, particularly the culture and the legal protection of wild animals and breeding of these animals; student understands what is the importance of ensuring appropriate conditions for the maintenance of animals in zoos, understands the principles of animal welfare in zoos and their links with animal husbandry and agriculture; student knows the basic concepts of ecology, including the biology and classification of selected species of wildlife and the organization, equipment, facilities management and runs for animals; student indicates the possibility of practical use of knowledge in real life. Skills: student properly conducts biological observations, interprets and discusses the results and draw appropriate conclusions, using scientific terminology; student observs an impact of environmental factors on the organism including animals kept in zoos, explains the interactions between different elements of the ecosystem and identify environmental hazards; student correctly interprets and applies the legal provisions concerning the organization of farms closed and detailed wild animal welfare; student on the basis of professional literature, formulate arguments concerning animal welfare, particularly in terms of ensuring their welfare, discussing the possibilities of a solution of current problems; student has the ability to prepare reports, project work, papers and other written assignments and presentations related to the subject object.

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): student shows interest in updating the knowledge of the biology and maintenance of appropriate living conditions of animals kept in zoos; student is able to schedule a task, adapting them to the test conditions, their equipment and capabilities; student is sensitive to nature as a collection of the cognitive, aesthetic and educational, and tourism and is aware of the importance of biodiversity and promote the protection of expressing the commitment to quality and the future of the environment; student is aware of the risks to humans and animals resulting from the progress of civilization, sees the need for ecology; student has ethical attitudes towards animals.

Prerequisites: zoology, animal hygiene, animal breeding

Course content: Objectives and tasks of zoos and their association with animal husbandry and agriculture. Outline of the history of zoos. A review of selected zoos. Keeping, breeding and welfare of wild animals (EAZA). The organization and arrangement of rooms and enclosures for wild animals. Legal protection of animals in zoos. Washington Convention (CITES). Red Book of animals. Extinct, endangered and threatened with extinction. A review of selected species of animals kept in zoos. The main zoonotic threats. Fieldwork in zoos (Wroclaw, Opole).

Assessment methods: Assessment of classes: periodic written test to assess the current rating (based on oral statements) progress and activity. The presence of the exercises is compulsory, the student may have only one unauthorized absence. In the case of excused absences the student is required to pass the relevant part of the material. Completion of exercises based on the average ratings. Completion of the course: students with valid completion of practical written examination in the examination session.
