Learning outcomes: Knowledge - student identifies the farming systems of different species of birds, defines the basic concepts of anatomy, physiology, nutrition and pathology of breeding birds, presents and discusses the appropriate conditions for maintenance and feeding of ornamental birds (parrots, Estrildid finches, starlings) and pigeons - student identifies the etiological factors of infectious diseases, metabolic and deficiency in various species of birds (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, pigeons, ornamental birds) indicates the source of infection and possible routes of spread of the disease, describes and interprets clinical symptoms and pathological changes occurring in various species of birds - student indicates the basic diagnostic methods used in birds, recommended treatment, prevention and solutions leading to an increase in herd health - student indicates the currently existing law on the eradication and monitoring of poultry diseases, especially diseases from the OIE list Practical skills - student is able to act in accordance with the applicable standards and ethical principles - student performs basic clinical and post-mortem examination of the various species of poultry and exotic birds, takes the appropriate treatment, appropriate vaccinations - student collects, in the proper way, the material for diagnostic tests (microbiological, virological, serological, histological and molecular) - student analyzes and interprets the results of diagnostic tests, based on them student takes appropriate therapeutic and prophylactic action

Competences: - student has the responsibility for the decisions to the people and animals - student places the good of patient in the first place

Prerequisites: Animal breeding and nutrition, microbiology, pathologic anatomy, pharmacology, veterinary toxicology

Course content: Breeding technology of various bird species, selected problems of bird anatomy and physiology; embryopathology; diseases related to the nutrients` deficiency, environmental conditions, metabolic disorders; diseases of parasite, bacterial, fungal and viral origin. Moreover, diseases of unknown etiology, the most frequent poisonings in birds, officially controlled diseases, veterinary diagnostics and immunoprophylaxis.
