Knowledge:
Student:
W1- student name and defines basic concepts and statistical parameters and explains their use in the natural sciences, especially for the description of the population [BC1_W03];
W2 - suggests the appropriate methods of data collection and selects appropriate to the studied problem statistical procedure [BC1_W03, BC1_W04];
W3 - identifies and explains the possible sources of error of the results, understands the rules for evaluating their statistical significance [BC1_W03];
Skills:
Student:
U1 - plans the proper conduct of research (experiment), estimates the necessary number of observations [BC1_U05];
U2 - analyzes experimental data using appropriate statistical methods with the use of spreadsheets, especially the package Statistica [BC1_U04, BC1_U05];
U3 - correctly presents (graphically and tabular) and interprets the results, draw valid conclusions [BC1_U04, BC1_U05];
U4 - has the ability to prepare project work [BC1_U18];
Competences:
Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors):
Student:
K1 - is aware of the opportunities created by knowledge of statistics and ability to use statistical packages and are happy to use them [BC1_K01, BC1_K03].
Prerequisites:
without preconditions, indicated basic knowledge of probability theoryCourse content:
Statistics as a tool for life science research (descriptive and mathematical statistic). General population and the sample. Normal distribution. Measures of central tendency and dispersion. Examination of the relationships between the characteristics (variables): interval, serial and nominal. Regression equations. Verification of statistical hypotheses using the binomial and normal distribution. Confidence intervals, the critical value. Parametric and nonparametric tests. Basic of analysis of variance (ANOVA). Biological distances. Principles of planning of experiments.Recommended literature:

Assessment methods:
Assessment exercise: regular (every 2-3 weeks) written tests, current rating (based on oral statements) of progress and activity. A necessary condition for completion of exercises and to take the exam is to present a research project.
The presence of the exercises is compulsory, the student may have only one unauthorized absence. In the case of absence a student is required to pass the relevant part of the material. Completion of exercises based on the average ratings.
Completion of the course: students holding a valid pass may have a written exam test (40-50 closed questions, problematic in part) during the exam session. The exam lasts 100 minutes and is considered as passed at 55% correct answers. If the exam is not passed in the first time, student has the right to pass it (in writing) in the second period.
Comment:
It is necessary to equip the classrooms with computers from running pack Statistica PL.
