Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Knowledge about: Humic substances of the soil, its properties and importance in the soil environment. Chemical properties of soils: macronutrients. Chemical properties of soil: micronutrients. Soil acidity and its effect on plant growth. Sorption properties of soils: integrated dispersion and soil colloids. Types of sorption and their role in stopping and availability of ingredients in the soil. Abundance of soil. Soil fertility and the factors that degrade soil fertility. Establishment of soil: soil forming processes. Diagnostic horizons of soil. Systematics of soils. Soil classification and valuation rules for the distribution of soil complexes agricultural suitability of soils. The evaluation of the soil environment. Skills: Skills in: Defining soils systematics. Identify the main taxonomic units on the soil monoliths. Ability to the valorization of the soils on basic level. Recognizing complexes of agricultural suitability of soils. The cartography of soils and preparing the map of soils in the detailed scale

Competences: The student acquaints oneself with the origin of soils, soil proprieties and processes taking place in them under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors. The student knows the bases of the soils systematics, he can carry out and interpret basic useful analyses in the valuation of the environment condition, defining the usable value of soils. He also gain practical skills of usage of soil science cartographical studies.

Prerequisites: Basics of physics and chemistry.

Course content: The aims of the course is to acquaint students with genesis of soils, soil distribution, properties and the taking place processes under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors. The task of soil science at the fields of study - Environmental Protection is to connect basic natural sciences with agricultural sciences with particular emphasis on the impact of anthropogenic factor (which may influence positively or negatively on the soil fertility) and soils rational use.
