Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student acquires basic knowledge about the elements, groups of chemicals and chemical transformations needed to understand the processes, which occur in living organism and the environment. Student understands the environmental hazards associated with the use of chemical compounds. The student has an elementary knowledge of health and safety in the chemical laboratory. Skills: Student is able to find the necessary information from the scientific literature, databases and select them, interpret and draw conclusions. The student can use basic chemical terminology correctly.

Competences: Student organizes and carries out research in a team. The student observes the principles of health and safety during chemical experiments. He is responsible for entrusted equipment. The student is aware of the dangers and the influence of chemicals on the environment.

Prerequisites: None.

Course content: Basic concepts and definitions in chemistry. Stoichiometry. Atomic structure. The periodic table of elements. Types of chemical bonds. Kinetics and chemical equilibrium. Equilibriums in electrolyte solutions. Electrolytic dissociation. Hydrolysis and pH. Buffer solutions. Solubility and solubility equilibrium. Selected aspects of titrimetry. Redox reactions. Basic types of reaction in organic chemistry. Basic organic compounds and their physical and biological properties. Isomerism. Methods of the organic compounds identification.
