Lecturer: dr hab. inż. Elżbieta Jamroz
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: The student learns the soil as an environment for plants. Meets the influence of the soil on the growth and development of plants. Meets the influence of soil properties on nutrient uptake. He knows and understands the impact of clay minerals, sorption complex and other properties of the proper development of the plant. Meets threat for plant growth due to the inadequacy of the requirements of the plants to soil quality. The student can use the literature and standards to self-learning and improving professional competence. Student is able to link the degree of soil degradation as a result of human activity with the properties constituting their resistance to specific factors degrading. He is able to perform basic soil analysis and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments which improve their fertility. The student has a basic theoretical and practical knowledge about basic biotic and abiotic factors affecting the development and the process of soil formation. Acquires knowledge about soil - environment of organisms living and one of the main factors determining the growth and development of plants in different ecosystems. Can explain the potential for the development of environmental factors in order to prevent environmental degradation soil processes.

Competences: The student can use the literature to determine the quality of the soil, as well as self-learning and improving professional competence. Student knows how to associate requirements of plants in relation to the quality of the soil, the degree of risk of soil degradation as a result of human activity with the properties constituting their resistance to specific factors.

Prerequisites: Natural science at the secondary school level

Course content: The formation of soils, their morphology, clay minerals, three-phase system, physical properties, the availability of water for plants, the chemicophysical properties, cation exchange capacity, soil organic matter, biological properties, soil degradation causes, effects, fertility, classification.
