Knowledge
The graduates of the course know and are able to describe basic taxa of pests and pathogens of cultivated plants. They have essential knowledge of plant breeding and seed material quality, and are aware of their importance in plant protection. They understand environmental phenomena that take place and are affected by microorganisms. They know methods of preventing and directly managing of the pest and pathogen incidence. They have basic knowledge of the composition and mode of action of chemical and biological plant protection products that are applied in agriculture and horticulture. They have limited awareness of the available assortment of such preparations. Nevertheless, they know basic rules concerning their application. They understand individual and ecological threats potentially posed by irresponsible pesticide application. Consequently, they are aware of the necessity of following the rules of IPM (integrated plant protection). They know selected aspects of weed biology and the ecological prerequisites of weed development that are applicable in reduction of weed incidence in crops. They know the most important species of segetal weeds. They have knowledge on prevention of field infestation by weeds, and on the non-chemical methods of weed incidence reduction. They are aware of the mode of action, selection, application techniques and habitat consequences of herbicide application.

Skills
The graduates recognize biological threats typical for agricultural production process. They can recognize and classify the most important taxa and taxa assemblages of agricultural pests. They are capable of designing of simple monitoring systems. Considering environmental and economic aspects of farming, they can prevent and reduce pest incidence. They can conform to the rules of IPM. They can take appropriate action in order to reduce pest incidence and to reduce the effect of abiotic factors on crops. They can assess the ecological consequences of the application of plant protection products. When designing chemical treatments, they include elements that reduce the risk of permanent damage to the environment. They are capable of independently obtaining necessary information in plant protection field, from diverse sources. They can recognize the most important species of segetal weeds. They are able to design, according to the assumptions of IPM, weed control in the major crops. They can assess and reduce negative consequences of herbicide application.

They are aware of the importance of sustainable development. They can take economic decisions guided by their concern about condition of the environment and considering the economic aspects. They respect safety rules in plant production. They understand the role of professional extension service and the necessity of the life-time education. The graduates of the course understand the social importance of preventive measures taken to maintain good health status of crops. They are aware of the responsibility taken in application of plant protection methods; they are aware of the environmental effects of these methods. They understand social benefits resulting from adoption of IPM. They understand necessity of the life-time education in the fields of plant protection and environment protection. They are capable of team work. They can define precisely the main directions in plant production, taking the environmental safety into account.

Plant protection regulations being currently in action. Pest organisms in agricultural ecosystems. Biotic and abiotic factors affecting the arthropod populations. Pest and beneficial insect fauna of the main major crops. Plant diseases caused by abiotic factors and by fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes and parasitic higher plants. Disease diagnostics. Estimation methods of disease incidence, monitoring and forecasting of disease development. The effect of pest incidence on the economic results of farm production. Plant protection methods, pest monitoring and forecasting. Preventive methods in plant protection. Characteristics of the most important pesticide classes. Basics of weed control: cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical weed control. Classification, mode of action and application techniques of herbicides. Reduction of the applicatin rate of herbicides in field crops. The environmental consequences of herbicide application. Diagnostics of most important weed species. Designing of weed control in the major crops. The effect of plant protection on the environment. Crop design considering the economic aspects.Recommended literature:
