Knowledge
Students after completion of the course explain reasons for the widespread use of enzymatic transformations in practical applications; characterize major processes which utilize biotransformations; explain mechanisms of the reactions most often used in biotransformations; identify products of enzymatic reactions; indicate type of biocatalyst for a selected transformation.
Skills:
Students perform on their own microbial transformations, prepare biocatalysts, conduct isolation of the products, determine parameters of the process, control transformation progress, operate analytical equipment, interpret and analyze the results.Competences:
Students are able to work in a team, and understand the role of following the rules indicated in the instructions, due to exposure to chemicals and microorganisms.

Organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology
Course content:
Catalytic properties of enzymes. Hydrolysis reactions. Enzymatic reduction of carbonyl group. Hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by P450 cytochrome monooxygenases; preparation of hydroxyl derivatives with the use of dehydrogenases. Use of biotransformations in steroid chemistry. Enzyme-catalyzed isomerization reactions. Use of biotransformations in food industry.Recommended literature:

The course in English will be avaliable if minimum of 6 students sign up for a group. If less than 6 students will sign up for the group the course will be avaliable in Polish with the possibility of individual support in English.
