dr hab. Jacek Twardowski, prof. UPWLanguage of instruction:
Polish / EnglishLearning outcomes:
The student knows and describes the most important diseases of agricultural plants, he understands their epidemiology, knows stages of the infection process, knows basic pathogen taxons causing diseases of agricultural plants as well as the pests of agricultural crops. Understands phenomena occurred in the environment under microorganisms and pests influence. Has knowledge about their value for man and environment, knows the general topics consider plants resistance to diseases and pests, knows issues related to damages caused by arthropods, nematodes, snails and rodents in agricultural crops. Associates groups of pests and diseases to individual plants species. Describes the damages of plant tissues caused by pests.
Knows and understands the modifying influence of abiotic factors (temperature, moisture ect.) on development and range of potential damages. Understands biodiversity value and the role other f biotic factors as elements stabilizing the balance arthropods population in agrosystems. Knows the biological basis of insects harmfulness. Knows anthropocentric threats leading to adverse effect quantitative dysfunction within pest population (outbreaecs).
Students understand the harmfulness thresholds, as approximately value describing damage threats. Understands the role of harmfulness thresholds. A student is able to define basic concepts related to the chemical insects communication and other monitoring methods of harmful species in the crop. Understands of the possibility of the potential use them in practice. Has a basic knowledge about integrated methods of the agricultural plant protection.Competences:
The student is able correctly diagnose the most important diseases of agricultural plants and possesses the practical skill to recognise most important pests of agricultural plants. Diagnoses and classifies basic taxa and groups of pathogenic micro-organisms and pests appearing on agricultural plants. Can to evaluate the pests and pathogens harmfulness and threats connected with their occurrence in the crop. Students can make a correct control decision based on harmfulness thresholds and justify correctness of this decision.
The student plans simple pest and diseases monitoring systems in agricultural crops; can applay IPM methods. Can check quality applied treatments. He can collect data necessary to conduct engineer tasks.Student understands the social importance of prevention in of agricultural plants protection. Takes action to restrict of diseases and pests with integrated methods of plant protection. Understand responsibility of correct implementation integrated methods of plant protection. Student is able work individually and also in the team - taking different member roles on in the group. Understand of social advantages resulting fromthe active application of integrated pest methods of the crop protection. He can critically refer unreliable marketing information concerning large threats caused by pests and necessities of their immediate control (the insecticides abuse). Understand social threats connected with excessive pesticides application in communities.Prerequisites:
Botany, Plant Physiology and Ecobiology, Microbiology, Virology, Mycology, Pathogenic fungi and fungus-like organisms, the Basis of Crop production, General EntomologyCourse content:
Students recognize diseases of different agricultural plants caused by fungi, bacteria, mycoplasmas, viruses, nematodes and parasitic plants. They learn also about plant dieseases caused by abiotic factors. . They will meet the epidemiology of diseases in field crops., diagnosis methods in applied phytopathology and methods of evaluations of health state of plants.
Pest diagnostics. Biology of most important agricultural pests (insects, mites, nematodes and snails). The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on number and the dynamics of the pest occurrence. Natural enemies of agricultural crop. The methodology of crop inspection, sampling tests, the practical evaluation of threats caused by pests.
