Lecturer: dr hab. inż. Renata Galek
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The student has a general knowledge of the molecular basis for variability of crops and systems of molecular markers. He describes the processes of genetic mechanisms determining agronomic traits, including resistance, tolerance to biotic and abiotic factors. He knows the benefits of the use of different methods of expanding the genetic diversity of crossing and mutation induction for the creation of new varieties. He knows the need for analysis of genome collinearity during domestication and improvement of crop plants, including model plants. Skills: The studentis able to assess the suitability of biotechnological methods in the assessment of genetic variation in the creation of new plants varieties. He is able to perform under the guidance of mentor simple research task aimed at optimizing the mutagenic agent. He knows how to use the tests in vivo and invitro for selection of plants to abiotic and biotic stresses and choose suitable molecular techniques. He can search the database of genetic sequences useful for plant selection and identification of mutation. He knows the rules of crossing the plants in order to derive useful recombinants. He has the ability to demonstrate how to identify favorable genotypes of crop plants by MAS marker.

Competences: The studentis aware of the genetic mechanisms which determine the variability of plants. He understands the relationships that occur at different stages of plants growth in relation to genes expression. He understands the role of nuclear and cytoplasmic inheritance in the development of crop plants varieties. The student correctly identifies whether a feature is a result of genes, or its expresion depends of environmental factors. Student decides which one to choose a strategy for improving plants using biotechnological methods, depending on the genetic background. He knows the genetic and biochemical mechanisms of plants responses to abiotic and biotic stresses, and the student is able to use it to develop a procedure for obtaining safe food.

Prerequisites: Chemistry, botany, genetics
