Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 - knows the chronology of human prehistory. Explains and describes human cultural diversity in time and space. Knows and understands the complex rules of human functioning within society and explains them in terms of cultural categories [BC1_W13]; W2 - tells the story of the development of archaeology as well as the development of research methods. Names and describes the basic fields of archaeology and explains its relationship to the natural sciences and [BC1_W16]; W3 - knows the most useful techniques, tools and materials in archaeological research. Knows the rules of organising and types of archaeological sites and appropriate research methods, knows methods of preservation and describing of exhibits, especially biological samples humanities in accordancewith applicable law[BC1_W18, BC1_W20]; W4 - understands the basic cultural phenomena and processes and their relationships with a numerous related fields. Indicates the possible practical application of the knowledge gained in the socio-economic development. Understands the risks and ethical and moral issues associated with the development of archaeology [BC1_W19]; Skills: Student: U1 – properly handles the equipment used for field studies [BC1_U02, BC1_U12]; U2 – indicates the proper methods and techniques of archaeological documentation [BC1_U12]; U3 – properly plans the organisation and conduct of field studies [BC1_U13]; U4 – correctly interprets and applies the law on the organisation and presentation of the research results [BC1_U15]; U5 - can prepare for the written work and multimedia presentations containing their own opinions confronted with the literature, including foreign language, using different sources of knowledge [BC1_U17, BC1_U18 BC1_U19];

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviours): Student: K1 - demonstrates the need to develop knowledge lifelong [BC1_K01]; K2- is aware of the responsibility for the tasks performed jointly within a team [BC1_K02]; K3 - plans research tasks adapting them to the conditions and capabilities of equipment while prioritising tasks, takes responsibility for entrusted equipment [BC1_K03, BC1_K08]; K4 - observes health and safety rules at an archaeological site, in particular with regard to microbiological hazards [BC1_K09].

Prerequisites:

Course content: The concept of archaeology, history of archaeology and its role among other natural sciences and humanities. Specialisation in archaeology, chronological division of human history, migration of the human race, beliefs, arts, crafts. The phenomenon of formation of local cultures. Changes in the ways of life of people associated with agriculture, sedentary lifestyle, metallurgy, the creation of urban centres. Transition of natural into cultural environment- human role in forming own environment. The role of armed and economic conflicts in forming, developement and collapse of archaeological cultures, the issues of acculturation and migration. Archaeological cultures on Polish soil since the appearance of man to the creation of the Polish State. Archaeology as a historical science - its role in the study of the Middle Ages, modern and present times. The role of archaeology in the study of nature. Role of archaeology in forensic research.

Assessment methods: Students who have a positive assessment of the laboratory training have to pass the test (25 open-ended questions), which takes 90 minutes. The final grade is the average grade in classes and passed the test of knowledge of the lectures. Tutorials: an essay (up to 4 pages of A4 print) or a multimedia presentation on the issues raised during tutorials, grades based on oral answers and participation in class activities. The class attendance is mandatory, the student may have only one unexcused absence. In the case of excused absences a student is required to pass the relevant part of the material. Pass classes based on grade point average.
