Language of instruction: Polish / English

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student know the genome organization of yeast belonging to species applied in biotechnological processes. He is able to found in the most important data bases information about sequence and function of gene, regulatory sequences, protein sequences and adequate literature publications to deepen his knowledge about: phylogeny of genomes, gene family, gene, genetic redundancy, conservation of genes syntheny and functional classification of genes. Skills Student is able to interpret and analyze the basic data concerning yeasts genomes. He could easily find information on particular genome, gene or protein and used it in planning of the own studies: comparative (alignment of sequence) or experimental (isolation of gene, protein, regulatory sequence).

Competences: Student realize the enormous size of data concerning sequenced genomes and the increasing rate of new data acquisition and is able to take the distance. Simultaneously he is conscious of international cooperation involved in learning and understanding of genomes organization and of the regulation ways of cells differentiation and cells function in the organism.

Prerequisites: biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics engineering.

Course content: Yeast genomes study by the exploration of internet available databases. Organization, size and contents of genomes of different species. Functional classification of genes and genes family. Phylogeny and evolution of eukaryotic organisms. Laboratory techniques applicable for the study of genome organization and sequencing are presented and discussed

Recommended literature: 1. Genomes, Brown T., BIOS Scientific Publisher Limited, North Yorkshire, UK 1999 2. Genomic Exploration of the Hemiascomycetous Yeasts, in FEBS, 487 (1) , 2001 3. Internet databases : SGD, Genolevures, NCBI, PDB. 4. Scientific papers describing new genome features in yeasts.

Assessment methods: reports and/or written exam
