Student knows basic environmental and technical conditions determining the character of water relations of a given area.
Student has general knowledge on the methods of their regulation in areas with excessive moisture in various soil, meteorological and land use conditions.
Student knows the basic principles of design of systematic and non-systematic drainage systems, structures on those systems, choice of safety measures and devices.
Skills
Student has the ability of diagnosing potential need for drainage of an area on the basis of analysis of various direct and indirect environmental symptoms and soil and hydrographic factors, he is capable of making a selection of technical and non-technical methods of regulation of water relations of the area depending on the causes of the existing excessive moisture level.
Student is able to determine basic parameters of drainage ditches, he can design the basic elements of systematic drainage of an area, he can propose additional measures that will make the drainage more efficient.
Competences:
Student understands the importance of optimum regulation of water relations for food production in agriculture, and for the possibility of non-agricultural land use and management.Prerequisites:
Physics and chemistry of soils, meteorology and hydrologyCourse content:
The subject-matter of the course covers problems concerning the causes, symptoms and effects of excessive moisture and flooding, and methods of drainage of lands under agricultural and forest use, built-up areas, sports and recreation grounds, and land under transport infrastructure.
Objectives and tasks of melioration of agricultural and urbanised lands and factors affecting the water relations of those areas; causes, symptoms and effects of excessive soil moisture, methods of regulation of water relations, drainage standards. Drainage by means of ditches, their technical parameters, strengthening of banks and bottoms, structures on drainage ditches, maintenance and conservation of drainage devices. Principles and methods of precipitation water management. Fundamentals of drainage, elements of drainage network, drainage materials, technical parameters of drainage network, safety measures and devices, structures on drainage network, intake of foreign waters, spring waters, drainage of no-outflow basins, interactions of agromelioration treatments with drainage, drainage of orchards, squares, sports fields, housing estates, construction sites and objects.
