PolishLearning outcomes:
During the course the students get theoretical and practical knowledge of the origin, taxonomy, role in ecosystems and the methods of study of particular ecological groups of mammals. The protection status of species mentioned in Appendix II and IV of E.U. Habitat Directive and the description of procedures of applying for licenses for study are also given.Competences:
After completing the course student will be able to determine in natural habitats the majority of mammalian species occurring in Poland. Student will be also familiarised with methods of trapping and marking different mammalian species as well as with preserving and maintaining the mammalian collection. After passing the course students will be able to use radio-tracking as a method of study animals. Prerequisites:
vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of vertebratesCourse content:
The first part of the course contains information about study methods i.e. – trapping, preserving and maintaining the mammalian collection, marking, radio-tracking and using data loggers. During its second part the protection status of mammals in Europe is revealed and the procedures of applying for licenses are described. The next part contains the information about taxonomy, species diversity and role in ecosystems of particular mammalian orders. The last part is composed of the field trip including the practical course of radio-tracking.Recommended literature:
