After completing the course, the students should:
know the valid division of farmlands to different types, the sources of information on real estate, rural area development works, the relations between spatial planning and land economy;
know how to determine the shape of the village and the farm, and how to use the measures of agricultural transport evaluation.

Course content:
The definition of agricultural production space in connection with the definition of agricultural areas and the agricultural function of terrain as described in the local spatial development plan of a municipality and the types of spatial development structures (agricultural production complex). Problems in developing rural areas: the development of rural areas (eco-development) and agricultural production space, monitoring the structure of land use, the spatial organisation of activity in rural areas. The border between agricultural area and forest. The structure of land use, the definition of farmland, the distribution of different types of farmlands, groups and types of farmlands defined in the land and property register (the cadaster), rules for including farmlands in specific groups. The division of farmlands from the ecological perspective, the determinants of the location of a given type of land, farmlands located in an open landscape, neighbouring farmlands (ecosystems and ecotons). The principles and guidelines related with developing farmlands. The agricultural production space in the open landscape of a village (elements of open landscape: rural settlement, land configuration, agricultural lot, types of lot patterns, roads, buffer strips etc.). The checkerboard farmland pattern. The issues of developing landscape and preventing erosion in spatial development. The eco-development of rural areas and the ecological barriers of development (natural – primary, secondary: crated by humans – legal, organisational). The determinants of eco-development. The systematic perspective on agricultural space – agricultural production space as an area of agricultural function, its relations with other functions in rural areas. Farmland economy and the restructurisation of rural space (distributing land between business entities, improving farmland configurations, protecting the environment). Excluding land from agricultural production. Abandoning farmlands. The procedures behind design works concerned with land management and the restructurisation of agricultural space (the stages of the project: determining the actual state, analysing the potential conditions for development and evaluating the possibility for spatial solutions, land management and rural area development project). Agricultural production space in planning projects. The farm, agricultural real estate. The structure of farms in Poland compared to the structure of farms in other EU countries. Agritourist and ecological farms. Managing the agricultural real estate of the State Treasury. Rural area development works as part of agricultural production space management (the systematics of rural area development operations, definitions, time schedule, changes in the environment and landscape as a result of each rural area development operation, the organs responsible for their implementation). Agricultural transport, the indicators of the density of agricultural transport roads in an area, methods of designing roads in rural areas, outline losses, transport around the field, transport intensity. Issues related to the influence of regional and national infrastructural investments (highways, high-speed rail) on the agricultural production space and farmland configuration. The subject of agricultural space development in the development projects for the rural areas in the countries of the European Union – the legal, institutional, financial and social aspects.
