Learning outcomes: The course offers an opportunity of practical studies on material culture produced by prehistoric and early historic societies in Europe and in Polish lands. The focus of concern is intended to be on burial rites occurring in the past in various areas of our continent, determined mostly by religions and ideologies. Students will study techniques applied in a prehistoric agriculture and past methods of working on organic materials.
Competences: General orientation in European and Polish prehistory; after completing the postgraduate studies at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences, candidates may continue the studies to obtain a PhD degree at the Doctoral Studies of the Cultural Sciences at the Wrocław University.
Prerequisites: None.
Course content: Anthropogenesis and the oldest Palaeolithic cultures; the Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic in Europe; Human societies at the turn of the Pleistocene and the Holocene (the Final Palaeolithic, Mesolithic); Younger Stone Age (the Neolithic) – agricultural subsistence; Burial rites in the Stone Age in the Polish lands; Archaeological cultures of the Bronze Age and early Iron Age (economy and burial customs); the Le Tene and Roman period in the Polish lands; Geography of Slavonic tribes; from cremation to inhumation (Slavonic burials in the early Middle Ages).
