PolishLearning outcomes:
On completion of the course the students know the synthetic possibilities which offer biotransformation techniques in production of drug and food additives, as well as environmentally friendly cosmetics and detergents and the perspectives concerning bioremediation of polluted areas.Competences:
Student know how to use plant cells and enzymes in form of acetone powder to perform a biotransformation process, and is able to isolate products using column chromatography and interpret their IR and 1H NMR spectra.Prerequisites:
Organic chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Basics of biotransformationCourse content:
The knowledge concerning the use of enzymatic systems which result in modifications of the structure of natural substrates (carbohydrates, proteins, isoprenoids, antibiotics). Enzymatic carbon-carbon bond formation, ‘green chemistry” – enzymes in the synthesis of the biodegradable surfactants. Bioremediation as the useful tool of degradation of persistent pollutants. The course also provides the insight into genetic improvements of microorganisms.Recommended literature:
1. Biotransformations II, vol. 8a and 8b, editor D. R. Kelly, Wiley-Vch GmbH, Weinheim 2000
2. Biotransformations in organic chemistry, Faber K., Springer-Verlang, Berlin, Heidenberg 2000;
Assessment methods:
Written exam, the minimal level of knowledge required to pass the course is 60%.Comment:
