PolishLearning outcomes:
Student has a theoretical knowledge of metabolism and ecology of soil microorganisms. This knowledge lets him understand the role of microbes in soil fertility formation, biotransformation of mineral and organic fertilizers as well as their effect on plant growth. In addition, student knows the rules of sterile work with soil microorganisms. He is also able to use the microscope, to prepare the media and microscopic preparates. He can plan the simple experiments to count the number and biomass of different group of soil microorganisms. Competences:
The positive credit of this course, especially lab practicals, secures the basics for work with microorganisms. Student knows disinfection manners, which are useful in everyday life. Moreover, he is aware effect of microorganisms on plant growth and conditions of fruits and vegetable storage. Student has knowledge about commercial plant biocontrol products. Prerequisites:
biochemistry, biology and chemistry; Course content:
background of viral, bacterial and fungal systematic; background of aerobic and anaerobic microbial physiology; organic matter transformation; background of biosynthesis of secondary metabolites (antibiotics and mycotoxins); role of microorganisms in transformation of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur in soil; plant - microbe interactions.Recommended literature:
