PolishLearning outcomes:
Student has the knowledge on the basic biochemical processes responsible for the functioning of cell and of organisms. He knows how to handle different methods used in researching biochemical processes.Competences:
Knowledge in the realm of biochemistry (theory and practice) obtained during the lectures and classes is necessary for further studies of such subjects as plant physiology and related sciences. Passing the course permits conducting simple examination of biochemical processes. Effective collaboration in a team. Solving problems in creative ways.Prerequisites:
Knowledge of the selected topics of general chemistry (chemical bonds; intermolecular interactions) and organic chemistry (organic compounds - types and reactivity)Course content:
Lectures: Amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids (structure, properties, functions, synthesis and metabolism). Enzymes (classification, mechanism of action, kinetics, regulation of activity). Nucleic acid (structure, distribution, properties, biological significance). Replication. Transryption. Translation. Genetic kod. Respiration (biological significance, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, mechanism electron transfer, mechanism oxidative phosphorylation, oxidative pentose phosphate pathway, metabolic significance and energetics).
Practical Course: Kinetics of enzymes. Determination of sugars in plant material. Amino acids, protein: properties of amino acids and proteins, determination of protein content in seeds, denaturation of proteins. Lipids: saponification, soap salting-out, getting fat emulsion.

Assessment methods:
Assessment methods: Passing grades of laboratory course and written exam after semester 2; minimum 60% of knowledge to pass.Comment:
The students work on laboratory assignments that are connected to theoretical knowledge with practice. Participation in the laboratory assignments is obligatory. For each laboratory course students write laboratory reports
