Learning outcomes: Student learns the basic notions and issues of philosophy; acquires knowledge about a man of the West and his efforts made in search of values and meanings and their validation.

Competences: Completion of the course enables a student to understand better the characteristic of the West-European culture, to understand oneself and one’s own place in the world better.

Prerequisites: The humanities within the secondary school curriculum.

Course content: Contestations about the notion of philosophy. Theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy. Philosophy as a search for a view about the world and a man’s place in the world. Platonic notion of the Eros’ way as a way of philosophy. Christian revelation and medieval philosophy. Carthesian turning point in philosophy. The myth of mind and demythologisation of the world in modern philosophy. The idea of progress and its fall. The aspects of nihilism in philosophy and literature. Ecological philososphy as a trial in search of new solutions for fundamental dilemmas of a contemporary man.
