Students can recognize the most important metabolites and metabolism, understand the relation of the structure, properties and function of some important biomolecules. Students receive an overview of common methods for the separation and characterization of bioorganic compounds. Competences:
The student receives the basic knowledge of metabolic processes further exploited in other courses, e.g. genetic, physiology and food sciences. General biochemical methods are introduced which will allow students to perform laboratory work and research.Prerequisites:

An introduction to the most important fields of biochemistry with the following subjects: proteins – structure, function; enzymes-structure, function, kinetics of enzyme reactions, activity regulation; nucleic acids- structure, genetic information transfer; energy from metabolic processes –metabolic transformations of carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids.Recommended literature:
