Learning outcomes: During the course the students gain theoretical knowledge of the tendencies and ways of settlement development as well as of the complex building areas characteristic for various periods of history. They also get acquainted with the background, building methods and styles and the evolution of urbanisation of human settlements, the development and regression aspects of land management in rural areas, towns and metropolises in the world.
Competences: On completion of the course, the students can define and make a general identification of the building methods and periods in which the settlements were built taking into account historical tendencies and styles.

Course content: The history of human habitats, principles and rules. The main factors influencing the development or fall of habitats, conditions determining urban development. The role of localisation, natural conditions, factors related to technical, economic and socio-economic development, communication systems, defence and safety aspects. Historical methods and styles of land management and constructions, examples of complexes and their authors. An outline of trends in contemporary urban development.
