Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the students should be familiar with the forms and processes of developing small towns, know how to identify and correct the urban forms of small towns; know how to identify a village settlement system and compare it with European concepts; characterise the meaning of cultural values with regard to retaining and forming village identity; know how to identify and define the basic elements which allow for the creation and the promotion of villages.

Course content: Terms: image, village portrait – scope, notion of content, form and character. The village as a settlement organism – terms and meaning. The components forming the potential of a village settlement organism – the regional character of the constituents which determine the development of contemporary village forms – 21st century village profiles. Regional identity – the types, areas and aspects. The phenomenology of the spirit and the identity of a place as the basis for the determining of character and image. The regional forms of village management and the types and different forms of village architecture. The understanding and reading of meanings, regional cultural symbols in the material and non-material aspect as well as their correlates. Culture as a determinant of the development of rural areas. The image of the village in the instruments of spacial policy, elements of territorial marketing – the image of the village as the basis for creating and promoting the values of a village, including: the techniques and methods of creating and promoting the village. Historical outline of the European village settlement. The natural basis of village settlement location in Europe. The German, French, British and Dutch village within the settlement network. Planning village settlements. The small town – definitions. The landscape of a small town, the dominants, viewpoints, characteristic traits. The urban layout of small towns in the historical aspect. Spacial and functional structure. The factors fostering the development of small towns. Location in the settlement network, geographical location. Villages with urban traditions. Review.
