Semester: 2011/2012 summer
Name: ESTIMATION OF PARAMETERS
Major: Bioinformatics
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 4
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: dr hab. Krzysztof Topolski
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: During the course students learn theoretical and practical aspects of statistical estimation of parameters. The emphasis is put on teaching the statistical methods used when analysing data coming from genetics.

Competences: After completing the course student can estimate parameters of statistical distribution describing data. The students will be able to choose correctly the most suitable methods of the estimation and evaluate its accuracy. Knowing the basic methods of estimation allows the students to construct estimators in a case of data associated with typical genetics problems.

Prerequisites: Mathematics I , mathematics II, introduction to statistics, statistical analysis software.

Course content: During the course the methods of point and set estimation will be introduced. The lectures and classes will focus on describing the basic methods of construction of estimators (least squares method, method of moments and maximum likelihood method). The properties of estimators such as unbiased estimators, minimum variance unbiased estimators, asymptotically efficient estimators, asymptotically normal sequence of estimators will be discussed. Set estimation will be introduced and analysed. All introduced concepts and methods will be illustrated with the usage of data concerning mendelian genetics, population genetics, and molecular genetics.
