PolishLearning outcomes:
During the course students will gain a theoretical knowledge and practical skills concerning chosen biophysical processes and phenomena described, among others, by thermodynamics, optics, and nuclear physics and also concerning the influence of various forces and radiation on living matter. Additionally students will get the knowledge of biological membrane structure and processes of transporting substances through such membranes. They will learn about physical methods applicable in the study of the properties of biological systems living organisms (measurements of electric potentials in cells, spectroscopic techniques, NMR and so on) and will also become acquainted with the effects of physical factors (e.g., ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, temperature,) on organisms.Competences:
The knowledge acquired will allow one to undertake experimental scientific research by analyzing biophysical processes taking part in living organisms and finding practical solutions to problems connected with operation of biological systems. Completion of the course is required for those who would like to work in fields connected with laboratory studies and research.Prerequisites:
physics, biology, chemistry Course content:
thermodynamics of biological systems, transport of heat, water, and gases in organisms, hydrostatic and hydrodynamics in biological systems, acoustic waves and hearing, influence of mechanical factors on organisms, infrasounds and ultrasounds (Doppler’s effect), wave optics - optical system of an eye (molecular mechanisms of vision), elements of nuclear physics - using of ionizing radiation in medicine, biological membrane structure, functions and models, transport of substances through biological membranes, physical properties of biological structures - biopotential, application spectrofotometric research methods (NMR, EPR, fluorimetry) in biomedical diagnosis and research.Recommended literature:
