Knowledge:
- explains the basic mechanisms of acquired and nonspecific immunity in mammals including mechanisms of intestinal immunity
- describe the major food allergens
-explains the main strategies to reduce allergenicity of food
-indicates the application of biotechnological methods in the production of recombinant antibodies
-indicates the objectives and describes the methods of active immunization
-describes the basic method of obtaining the vaccine antigens and vaccine design
Skills:
- carry out simple tests based on antigen-antibody reaction including the methods of double immunodiffusion and ELISA
- describes and interprets the results of flow cytometric analysis
- examines the health risks of allergenic substances in food Competences:
Student is aware of the benefits and risks of human and animal health resulting from applications of biotechnology in the pharmaceutical and food industry Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge on Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics in Eukaryotes. Course content:
Organs and cells involved in immune reactions, molecular recognition surface antigen receptors that recognize pathogen molecular patterns and their ligands, antibodies- structure and function, the source of diversity and biotechnological methods for obtaining antibodies: monoclonal antibodies, phage libraries, transgenesis, antigens, antibody-antigen reaction, antigen presentation, major histocompatibility complex receptors, BCR and TCR, activation of lymphocytes, ways of communication between lymphocytes, cytokines, intestinal immunity, food allergies, allergens in food, the modulation of specific and nonspecific immunity by food (probiotics, nutraceuticals, natural nutrients) , immune deficiencies of nutritional background, anti-infective resistance and immunization, vaccines obtained by biotechnological methods, mechanisms of immune recognition of tumor antigens
