PolishLearning outcomes:
After ending the course a student will know basic genetic processes occurring in the cell, organism and population. The participant will be able to define genetic variability and explain the basic rules of inheritance. The member of the course will know the basis of molecular genetics, genetic engineering and biotechnological methods used in genetics and molecular diagnostics. A student will be able to explain benefits and dangers arising from plant transformation.
Student acquires the theoretical and practical knowledge connected with biology, agriculture, genetic variability, the basic rules of inheritance. Mendel’s genetics, basis of molecular genetics, genetic engineering and biotechnological methods used in genetics and molecular diagnostics.
Student acquires the ability to define basic genetic processes occurring in the cell (Mitosis, Meiosis), organism and population based on the examples of horticultural and gardening crops, will be able to term phenomenon of inheritance including basic definitions of genetic, cross-breeding of plants, Mendel’s laws, interaction of genes.
Competences:
Ending the subject gives the student possibility of further education in such fields like: biotechnology, molecular genetics and genetic engineering. The knowledge of basic molecular genetic methods gives the student a chance to find a job in biotechnological or tissue laboratories, research institutes, plant breeding or other units of the broader agricultural production. Prerequisites:
Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Biochemistry.Course content:
The basis of inheritance traits. Interaction of genes. Linkage of genes, location of genes on chromosomes, genetic maps. Polygenic inheritance. The inheritance of quantitative traits, inheritance in populations. Cytological basis of inheritance. Cells’ fission. Molecular basis of inheritance. Gene and chromosomal mutations. Genomic mutations. Theoretical basis of inbreeding and heterosis. Extra-chromosomal inheritance. Biotechnological methods in genetics, genetic transformations. Molecular markers. Methods of in vitro cultures. Recommended literature:
