Learning outcomes: After completing the course a student is able to: Knowledge a)describe basal chemical processes concerning ionic equilibrium in aqueous solutions, define basal principles of colligative properties of solutions. b) explain the principles of buffer solutions and their importance for living organisms, define and presents basal principles of chemical reactions kinetic. c) classify and describe basal chemical properties of organic compounds with one or two functional groups d) recognize structures and names of chemical compounds, especially basic building blocks of living organisms and biologically active compounds. Practical skills: a) uses the common laboratory equipment. b) performs basic chemical qualitative and quantitative determinations c) performs calculations concerning concentrations, pH, buffering properties, rate of chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium.

Competences: a)Student is able to use the basic laboratory equipment, lead basic chemical examinations and calculations. b)Student obtains the knowledge necessary for biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology course

Prerequisites: General chemistry, basic physics

Course content: Basic problems of general chemistry with special emphasis on chemical processes in water solutions and quantitative and qualitative analytical methods; and organic chemistry, concentrated on the structure and reactions of biologically important molecules.

Assessment methods: Completed laboratory exercises; running written test; the final written exam. The final grade at 80% depends on the result of the final exam, and at 20 % on the running marks.
