Learning outcomes: Knowledge: has general knowledge encompassing the key issues regarding the fundamentals of urban design; possesses basic knowledge on the subject of the process of designing service space in the city and the village; knows the many possibilities of managing areas which have served a different purpose in the past; has basic knowledge required to understand the social, economical, legal and other non-technical determinants of engineering activity, arranging urban interiors and understanding the principles behind the formation of spatial order within a residential unit; has basic knowledge regarding the trends related to revalorisation, revitalisation and recultivation of objects and terrains. Abilities: has the ability to learn on their own in the field of urban design and revitalisation of urban areas; can solve simple (engineering) project subjects and use the proper information-communication techniques to implement them; can perform a critical analysis of the manner of functioning of a chosen urban area, form spatial order in the city or village, draw the proper conclusions depending on close or further vicinity; can design a small residential complex using the proper methods, techniques and tools; can identify and correct simple urban forms; can perform an initial economic analysis of performed engineering tasks related to revitalisation and revalorisation; can prepare and present a multi-media presentation related to the revitalisation of a chosen part of a city; Social competence (attitudes): is aware of the need to properly and rationally manage space in urban areas. Can think and act in a resourceful manner; when preparing project solutions for a fragment of a city, is aware of the importance of engineering activity and understands its non-technical aspects and consequences, including its impact on the environment; is aware of their own social role in articulating the non-economical meaning behind managing an area, especially through the process of revitalisation and revalorisation; is aware of the role and meaning of the close or further in the forming of space in the city or the village.

Competences:

Prerequisites: demography and the socio-cultural determinants of spatial economy, urban history, freehand drawing, planning and technical drawing, design principles.

Course content: The basics and theory of urban planning. The settlement network of Poland. The arrangement and development of cities in Poland. The scale of a city. The beauty of cities. City ecology. Topography. City street network. Urban terrain. The value and protection of urban architecture. The technical and service infrastructure in the city. Green space in the open space system. Elements of urban composition. The role of composition in the process of urbanisation. The city and its spatial structure. The origin of contemporary housing. Urban space development. Elements of green composition in urbanism. Contemporary movements and tendencies in urban design. The development process of the city. The composition of the spatial structures of a rural settlement unit with regard to the systematics of a rural settlement (socioeconomic classification, morphometric classification – criteria, methods, common rural morphological forms, morphogenetic – common rural spatial forms. The principles of programming and designing the functional-spatial structure of a rural settlement: the characteristics of the programme, the characteristics of the management, location conditions and the physiographic conditions of construction areas. Evaluating urban areas, the principle governing the protection of historical spatial layouts, the revalorisation and revitalisation of urban areas. The revitalisation of downtown areas. The revitalisation of living quarters, post-industrial and post-military areas. Changes in the functional-spatial structure or urban areas. Adjusting the forms of urban areas to current and future needs. The new quality of public space.
