Learning outcomes: learning outcomes: After completing the course students will be able to identify the main systematic groups of unicellular organisms (Protista) and animals (Animalia), will acquire the basic level knowledge of inter-organismal relationships in natural and athropogenic ecosystems, will know the principles of ecosystems’ evolution. The acquired knowledge will enable students to distinguish the economically important taxa, with special reference to species which play an important role in food production and storage. The latter, combined with the issues concerning parasitology, will constitute a substantial overview of problems related to economically important taxa.

Competences: competences: Passing the course will create a possibility of working in diagnostic laboratories where the skill of economically important taxa identification is indispensable (pest-control units, research and clinical institutes, units dealing with the culture of taxa playing the positive role in food processing).

Prerequisites:

Course content: Course contents: Structure and biology of unicellular organisms and animals (Protista i Animalia). Morphological, physiological and ethological adaptations of organisms. The importance of unicellular organisms (Protista) and animals (Animalia) in shaping the soil community, in cleaning the water reservoirs, and in food, pharmaceutical and medical industry. Pests affecting plants and stored products. Parasites. Spread and modes of invasion. Methods of control. Invertebrates used in biological control. Basic eciological terminology; biocenoses, ecosystems, populations, interspecific relationships, trophic relations in ecosystems.
