Learning outcomes: Knowledge Knows properties of constructional metals; knows about metallurgic products; knows how to guarantee safety of metal structures; knows rules of constructing and designing cross-sections under simple loads; knows rules of designing axially loaded simple uniform steel columns and beams under simple bending; knows cases of local and global instability; knows steel fasteners; knows how to construct steel welded and bolted joints. Skills Is able to select right steel grade for structural members, is able to perform analysis of stability limit states and ultimate limit states of simple steel bar structures in scope of assessment of critical states and limit states; is able to design selected members and simple steel structures; is able to design welded or non-preloaded and preloaded bolted joints.

Competences: Understands the importance of right design of metal structures in terms of safety.

Prerequisites: strength of materials, structural mechanics

Course content: Steel properties. Metallurgic products. Ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states of steel structures. Design of welded connections and bolted non-preloaded, and preloaded connections. Realization of shop and field connections of steel structures. Uniform simple steel columns. Heads and bases of columns. Beams and beams systems. Steel beam to wall connections and steel beam bearings.

Assessment methods: completion of design project, passing two tests
