Learning outcomes: Knowledge: W01 - Student after completing the course delineates basic ideas of inorganic chemistry, uses correct chemical terminology. They determine general properties of the elements based on their position in the periodic table; characterize compounds according to the general classification (electrolytes, non-electrolytes, weak and strong electrolytes) [BH1-W02; R1A_W01, R1A_W03]. W02 - They acquire theoretical background and practical skills to solve problems related to the pH of the environment, buffering, neutralization [BH1-W02; R1A_W01, R1A_W03; BH1-W06; R1A_W03]. W03 - They are able to recall basic chemical laws and carry out related calculations. They know the structure of organic compounds, and are able to name and identify the general classes of organic compounds [BH1-W02; R1A_W01, R1A_W03]. W04 - They know rules of qualitative identification of selected ions and quantitative determination of the amount of an analyzed unknown compound on the basis of a performed analytical procedure or spectroscopic data [BH1-W02; R1A_W01, R1A_W03; BH1-W08; R1A_W03; BH1-W10; R1A_W04]. Skills: U01 - Student performs qualitative analysis of organic and inorganic compounds, employs titration methods in quantitative determinations and carries out necessary calculations [BH1-U01; R1A_U01; R1A_U03; BH1-U02; R1A_U02, BH1-U17; R1A_U10]. U02 - Student assembles and works with the apparatus and equipment for basic physical and chemical operations useful in the laboratory of organic chemistry [BH1-U01; R1A_U01; R1A_U03; BH1-U02; R1A_U02, BH1-U17; R1A_U10]. U03 - Student knows and obeys rules of work in a chemical laboratory, andgives correct interpretation of observed effects of chemical reactions [BH1-U01; R1A_U01; R1A_U03; BH1-U02; R1A_U02, BH1-U17; R1A_U10].

Competences: K01 - Student follows the instructions and obeys the work rules in a chemical laboratory [BH1-K02; R1A_K02; BH1-K04; R1A_K03; BH1-K09; R1A_K06]. K02 - They understand risks associated with the use of chemicals, towards themselves and classmates [BH1-K01; R1A_K01, R1A_K07; BH1-K09; R1A_K06]. K03 - Student is creative and keen on cooperation in the team; they are also active in solving problems using teamwork [BH1-K01; R1A-K01; R1A_K07; BH1-K02; R1A_K02; BH1-K11; R1A_K08]. K04 - They show responsibility and care towards the entrusted laboratory equipment [BH1-K07; R1A_K05; BH1-K09; R1A_K06; BH1-K11; R1A_K08].

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in chemistry

Course content: Atom structure, periodicity of the properties of elements. Types of chemical bonds. Equilibria in aqueous solutions of electrolytes: dissociation, neutralization, hydrolysis, acids and bases, amphoteric compounds, pH, buffers, solubility. Basics of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Chemical calculations.Red-ox processes, electrochemical series. Introductory chemical kinetics and catalysis. Isomerism of organic compounds. Nomenclature, properties, types and mechanisms of reactions of organic compounds. Properties of organic compounds according to their functional groups; major classes of biomolecules: carbohydrates, amino acids and nucleic acids. Application of spectroscopic methods to determination of the structure of organic compounds.

Assessment methods: Written exam. Laboratory exercises evaluated based on the attendance, performed exercises and presentation of their results and conclusions as written reports, activity - exercises, good preparation for the exercises, positive result of three colloquia.

Comment:
