Learning outcomes: Student is able to match the animal to environment basing on description of features of skin and fur coat, and conversely, from the description of environment is able to conclude of features that should be characteristic for skin and fur coat of animal living there.

Competences: Obtained knowledge allows to locate animal in the environment with respect to quality of fur coat features and understand the interactions between the environment and animal. Student is prepared to an objective assessment of features of skin and fur coat of animals - together with marking of variety/species membership, and may decide of conditions of animal maintenance with respect to inborn features of fur coat quality. The knowledge of features of skins and fur coat is also of a practical meaning with the use of animal products in everyday life.

Course content: Features of fur coat of animals differing with life environment (water, land, mixed) and also feeding base (plant protein, animal protein); typology of single hair (non-medullar, transitional, medullar, of constant growth, shedding) and coats (uniform, mixed, opened, closed, high, short), biological rhythms of production and exchange (shedding) of hair; assessment of histological features (proportions between tissue elements of skin, epidermis, hair follicles and hair), physical (thickness of dermis, diameter and length of hair,), functional (resistance on environmental factors, e.g. water, friction) and performance (felting) of different kinds of fur coat.

Assessment methods: Completion of practical 50%; written exam 50%.
