Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student knows the position of microorganisms in the world of living organisms – has a general knowledge about the structure and life functions of microorganisms and viruses – describes the phenomenon of microbial growth and defines basic growth parameters – knows the basics of microbial ecology and understands the interactions between microorganisms, higher organisms and inanimate environment – shows competent usage of microbiological terminology. Skills: Student is acquainted with microbiological lab equipment and the character and safety principles of work concerning microorganisms – has mastered basic methods of microbial cultivation and microscopy techniques – distinguishes main groups and forms of microorganisms – determines the number of microorganisms in the environment, makes microbiological analysis of air, water and soil.

Prerequisites: Biology, Biochemistry

Course content: Morphology, anatomy, life cycles and basics of systematics of bacteria, actinomycetes, yeast, filamentous fungi and viruses. Outline of microorganisms physiology; nutrition, respiration, growth. Interaction between microorganisms and the environment. Natural habitats of microorganisms, their interaction with other organisms and contribution to life functioning on our planet.

Comment: The course in English will be avaliable if minimum of 6 students sign up for a group. If less than 6 students will sign up for the group the course will be avaliable in Polish with the possibility of individual support in English.
