Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1- explains basic statistical parameters and their use in the natural sciences, especially for the description of the population [KB2_W02]; W2 - suggests the appropriate methods of data collection and selects appropriate to the studied problem statistical procedure [KB2_W02, KB2_W07]; W3 - identifies and explains the possible sources of error of the results, understands the rules for evaluating their statistical significance [KB2_W02]; Skills: Student: U1 - plans the proper conduct of research (experiment), estimates the necessary number of observations [KB2_U01]; U2 - analyzes experimental data using appropriate statistical methods with the use of spreadsheets, especially the package Statistica [KB2_U01, KB2_U03, KB2_U04]; U3 - correctly presents (graphically and tabular) and interprets the results, draw valid conclusions [KB2_U01, KB2_U03, KB2_U04];

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 - is aware of the opportunities created by knowledge of statistics and ability to use statistical packages and are happy to use them [KB2_K03]

Prerequisites: indicated basic knowledge of probability theory and basic of statistic

Course content: Statistics as a tool for life science research (descriptive and mathematical statistic). General population and the sample. Normal distribution. Measures of central tendency and dispersion. Examination of the relationships between the characteristics (variables): interval, serial and nominal. Regression equations. Verification of statistical hypotheses using the binomial and normal distribution. Confidence intervals, the critical value. Parametric and nonparametric tests. Basic of analysis of variance (ANOVA). Biological distances. Principles of planning of experiments.

Assessment methods: Assessment exercise: regular (every 2-3 weeks) written tests, current rating (based on oral statements) of progress and activity. A necessary condition for completion of exercises is to present an own research project.The presence of the exercises is compulsory, the student may have only one unauthorized absence. Completion of the course: students holding a valid pass may have a written test (40-50 closed questions, problematic in part) in theoretical part of material. The test takes no more 90
