Semester: 2013/2014 summer
Name: Engineering mechanics and strength of materials II
Major: Renewable Energy and Waste Management
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 4
ECTS points: 3
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: Dr hab. inż. Jerzy Bohdziewicz
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: 1. Knowledge: The student received the theoretical and practical messages in the range of the materials engineering problems, including the safe construction of machines problems solutions. He is able to identify the strength criteria of constructional elements for the simple and composed stresses of the material. 2. Skills: Student purchases the skill to engineering mechanics problem solutions, including unsolved from static’s methods. He is able to choose the shape and to count the machines construction elements sizes in dependence on loading forces and their moment’s quantity. He knows requirements relating to the ways of admissible safe loads qualification in the machine’s constructional solutions.

Competences: The student possesses the consciousness of the responsibility meaning for the projected and used technical constructions safety assurance. He had consciousness of the professional risk problem and he is able to inappropriate or incompetent projecting the construction results estimate. He appreciates the improving necessity and the need of the additional schooling.

Prerequisites: Mathematics, Physics, basic knowledge about properties of materials

Course content: Elasticity, plasticity, the Hooke’s law, admissible stresses, simple and complicate state of the strength, effort hypothesis, work, power, efficiency, mechanical energy, dynamic laws, dynamic of rotary motion.

Recommended literature: I. H. Shames: Engineering Mechanics - Statics and Dynamics, Prentice Hall 1997; L. Spiegel, G.F. Limbrunner: Applied statics and strength of materials, Prentice Hall 1999; E.J. Hearn: Mechanics of materials vol.2, Buttleworth-Heinemann 1997

Assessment methods: Obligatory credit of practices and exam - the required level of knowledge to credit is 70%. The graduates of 40% from practice work and 60% from exam have the influence on finally credit.
