Learning outcomes: After the course student can calculate statistics and can use suitable statistical tests; can research associations between statistical series; knows how Internet search engines works and can use them; can also use thematic databases; knows the rules of measuring scientific journals.
Competences: Student can use Internet search engines and thematic databases of life sciences and biomedical information at advanced level; can use suitable statistical tests correspondent to the problem and describe associations between statistical series estimating their strength.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of computer sciences.
Course content: Role of the Internet network in data processing and searching; Internet search engines; thematical databases – rules of measuring scientific journals; elementary statistics: sampling, measures of central tendency (average) and dispersion; an introduction to mathematical statistics: probability theory and hypothesis testing; normal (Gaussian) distribution, ratio test, distribution for the mean, confidence intervals; difference in means, application of random numbers and choice of the sample on the plane; nonparametric tests for the difference in means; an introduction to the analysis of variance: simple and multivariate classification; frequency analysis; correlation and regression.

Assessment methods: Passing the course is obligatory based on the presence, activity and final test; level of knowledge to pass the course: 50%.
