Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student knows the methods of scientific, legal, technical and organizational actions used for protection against floods. Knows methods of flood protection. Knows models of flood waves routing in rivers. Understands the importance of monitoring and flood forecasting for mitigation of effects of floods. Knows directions and trends of flood protection in Poland. Skills: Student can generally describe a problem of flood protection. Can make a proper assessment of a state of flood protection system. Can elaborate a technical conception of the flood protection according to applicable laws and regulations and in accordance with environmental requirements; knows how to acquire a necessary information and data from appropriate sources required for flood protection. Can propose and apply a proper model of flood routing in river bed. Can use computer techniques to collect, analyze and present data and results of own work.

Competences: Student understands the importance of water for social and economic development; is aware of the responsibility for the economical and rational management of water resources in the case of occurrence of flood; feels the need to deepen knowledge in the field of own specialization.

Prerequisites: meteorology and hydrology, fluid mechanics, hydrological extreme phenomena

Course content: Definition of flood, classifications of floods, flood occurrence in Poland and in Europe. Flood protection – tasks and responsibilities set out in the Water Law and Flood Directive EP and other legal instruments. Methods of flood protection of the river valleys. Hydrological basis for flood assessment. Measures of flood threat. Modelling of flood wave routing. Mathematical models of freshet waves routing in rivers. Impact of anthropogenic aspects on floods. Impact of hydrotechnical structures on floods (among others single reservoir, cascade of reservoirs). Development of flood protection system on the example of the Odra river basin. Directions and trends of flood protection in Poland (ISOK, Program for the Odra river – 2006). Hydrometeorological monitoring and flood forecasting. The importance of monitoring for mitigation of effects of floods. Study of flood protection. Principles for creating an operating instructions for hydrotechnical structures such as reservoirs, polders. Organization and tasks of flood protection services.
